Angel Figurines

I know it is after Christmas and all, but I don't think there's a bad time to talk about angels. I don't mean in a religious way, or even in a New Age-y way. I mean (of course!) figurines. Angel figurines!

I have my favorites and I'll highlight a few up and comers, too. Two of my favorites are Precious Moments and Willow Tree. And they could not be any more different! You've heard me talk about Willow Tree already, so I'll start with Precious Moments.

Precious Moments figurines are here because of two men. Sam Butcher and Bill Biel. Sam is the artist who created the adorable, big-eyed children. At first, like Hummells, there were greetin
g cards and a few years later, Enesco Corporation began to produce figurines. That was 1978 and today there are over a thousand different figurines in the collection. It's a amazing story of faith and friendship.

The Precious Moments angel figurines are more human than some other figurine lines. A popular seller in 2009 is a perfect example. "May Your Faith Light The Way" is a figurine of a little girl with a candle. She is, in the truest sense of the word, an angel even though she doesn't have wings. A more traditional angel figurine is "In The Radiance of Heaven's Light." She has wings and a star on her brow. The angel figurines "Angel of Mercy" and "Angel of Peace" are two more perfect (and popular!) examples of Precious Moments angels. One more example to offer -- some of the angel figurines have halos to complete their heavenly outfit. One of my personal favorites is "A Child is a Gift of the Lord" where the sweet little angel is bending over a baby in a basket. It's like she's delivering the baby to the brand new parents.

Willow Tree angel figurines are stark in comparison to Precious Moments angels. Now that I'm older, it's the look I prefer. The angels, like all Willow Tree figurines, have muted colors and no facial features. They do have wings, but no halos. "Angel of Prayer" and "Angel of Healing" are two very popular figurines in the collection. When friends are dealing with a health crisis, an "Angel of Healing" figurine shows them that I love them. It's a small thing, but I do believe in the power of positive thinking and the angel figurines can help!

There's a whole world, maybe even a universe, of angel figurines to choose from. Find the collection that really speaks to you. There's one out there, I'm sure of it. I'll highlight angel figurines again, I promise!

Hummel Figurines

I want to spotlight my first love -- Hummel. As I've said before, Hummel was my first exposure to figurines. My Mom had a handful of them and I loved them. The cheery little faces, the clothes, the colors!

The figurines are based on drawings and painting done by a German nun. Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel (she was born Berta Hummel) attended art school and then joined a convent. Although she died at age 37, her work lives on in the figurines.

One of my favorites was the "Apple Tree Boy." I thought it was amazing that he could be sitting in an apple tree while sitting on a shelf in my living room! The coloring in this figurine is exquisite. The apples are rendered perfectly.

From my own collection, I'll just share a few favorites. I recently picked up a "Stars & Stripes" figurine. It seems only fitting from our time in Germany. (My husband was stationed in Germany for two tours) While we were there, I had a blast picking up some hard to find and discontinued figurines, both for myself and Mom. During our first tour, we were so poor that I saved up for months to surprise Mom with a Hummel. I picked out the "Accordian Boy" figurine and packed it so carefully to make sure he made the trip home in one piece. I wish I'd been there when she opened the box.

When she passed away, I got her Hummels, including "Accordion." I can see them from where I'm sitting and they make me smile. I miss her very much. It's been almost 10 years since she died. I think that my love of figurines is at least partially a way to stay connected to her..... OK, enough of being sad! Let's talk about a few more Hummels!

To continue our musical theme, I picked up "Cheerful Tune" to go with the "Boy with Accordion". The colors are more muted in "Cheerful" but it's OK. It doesn't look weird or anything.

The Hummels have a special place in my heart -- I know that I'll always collect them. The figurines evoke to a simpler time and remind me of my childhood. I hope that one day my daughter will carry on the family tradition of collecting Hummels.

Coalport Figurines

I stumbled upon these beautiful female figurines recently -- Coalport Figurines. Well, what I stumbled on was a book about the figurines.

It's just one of those things -- standing at the thrift shop and you go "Hmm, what's this?" Flipping through the book, I saw all of these marvelous pictures. I'm not generally a "collector" collector. Like I'm not someone who feels comfortable spending $800 on a figurine just because it's a one-of-a-kind. If I love it, and I want to save up for it, fine, I'll buy it. But that's a lot of money! Even to someone like me, who loves figurines.

Coalport figurines are named after the town of Coalport, in England. The original factory was there, in the town. For the first 80 years, the factory specialized in tableware. They did a few specialized pieces but almost all of their output was for the table.

Starting in the mid 1880's the factory got heavily into Parian. It's like an ersatz marble. Which lead me to another book.... It's like going down a rabbit hole sometimes. I like the look of Parian. I'm big on simple, clean lines. I don't know that I'll get into Parian in any sort of capacity. It might be just too much. I mean, there is only so much room in the house.

But maybe a small statue or two. I probably have held Parian in my hands without realizing that it wasn't porcelain. I swear, I still have so much to learn!

But back to the original point of this post! Coalport. The figurines are just gorgeous. There's some thing about the glaze that's most appealing. If you look at the picture at the left, you can see that the little house just glows with life. The Coalport workmanship is amazing.

Many of the figurines are female -- women in long dresses. They are not all of this style, but in my mind I think Scarlet O'Hara from Gone With the Wind. Those kinds of figurines -- gracefully, sweeping, delicate.

I've seen some discontinued figurines online for $100-$150. I might just pick one up and see what I think. In the meantime, the book (although it's almost 10 years old) is a fun way to pass the time.

Betty Boop Figurines

What is it about Betty Boop? Here's a dame who's just about to turn 80 and she's still going strong. Betty Boop merchandise (particularly the figurines!) is amazingly popular. She's had a resurgence since the early 80's and it shows no signs of slowing down.

Is it the sexy side of her? That's what I think. Betty Boop is voluptuous and proud of it. Her sexuality is not hidden. In 1930, when she first made the cartoon scene, she was the only mature female on the screen. All the other females were either little girls or quasi-animals, like Minnie Mouse. Betty, in contrast, had cleavage.

Any Betty Boop fan will love the "calendar girl" collection. The Halloween figurine is really fun. Betty is slinky in her black dress with a high slit up the side. St. Patty's day figurine is more traditional. She's doing a flapper sort of a move and if it weren't for the green dress with gold shamrocks, you'd never know it was a calendar theme.

I like the more traditional "white dress" figurine. Classic Betty Boop. She's sexy and pouty with hands on hips. The feather boa adds just the perfect accent. Of course, there's also something to be said for the "hula girl" figurine (that's the month of June in the calendar girl collection, by the way) since it hearkens back to an early and risque cartoon. The cartoon was called "Betty Boop's Bamboo Isle" and Betty wears a grass skirt and a lei. And earrings. Nothing else. Pretty wild for 1932.

The calendar girls figurines are about $12 each, so it's an easy way to get into the world of Betty Boop figurines. But it's not the only way. There are Betty Boop bobblehead dolls and Betty Boop keychains, pillows, throws and watches. Coffee mugs, photo frames and lamps. But since this blog is all about figurines, that's what matters to me.

Willow Tree Nativity

If you are in the market for a new holiday creche or nativity scene, consider buying a Willow Tree nativity set. Compared to many other figurine collections, the Willow Tree brand is very affordable. You can have the beginner set of figurines, which includes Mary & Joseph, and the infant Jesus, but also includes a young shepherd with a sheep in arms. It's a lovely start to what will become a Christmas tradition.

Additional pieces for the Willow Tree creche could include angels and, of course, the Three Wisemen. But you can also accessorize with additional animals and shepherds, as well as an actual creche backdrop. The accessories are reasonably priced: $60 for the Wisemen set or the Shepherd set and about $80 for the creche.

If your budget is smaller, you can get the Holy Family for about $65. Then through the years, you can add individual pieces to the scene. That's one of the beauties of a Willow Tree nativity, you can buy a single angel figurine for under $15. For years I have used nativity scenes as Christmas presents. A new couple, just starting out and celebrating their first Christmas as a family, will appreciate the thoughtful gift of a starter creche. And then, each year you can add to their nativity with a new piece! For some people that might seem hokey, but what's a better gift -- a gift certificate to a restaurant or something that evokes the real meaning behind the Christmas season?

Willow Tree was created by Susan Lordi and one of the things I love about the collection is the simplicity. Mary, with Jesus in her arms, creates a striking pose. But there's no eyes, no smile, on the figurine. Everything you get from looking at it comes from the pose. Mary is gently adjusting the cloth around her child's head. She leans in as though to whisper to Him. It's a perfect portrait of motherhood and it's all done in a few stokes.

I'm glad I found Willow Tree. The figurines are really beautiful and buying them for other people gives me joy. There's more than just the nativity pieces, of course and one of my favorite baby shower gifts is an "Angel of Mine" figurine. Mother and newborn caught in a moment of tenderness and quiet.

As the holiday draws closer and you're still trying to finish up your shopping, consider giving the gift of a Willow Tree nativity scene. It's a gift they'll cherish for years to come.

Tis the Season to Buy Ornaments!

What with all the decorating possibilities it's no wonder that Christmas is my favorite time of year. It's also a chance to combine figurine collecting with the holiday season! Most of the well known figurine creators do a holiday line. I want to share a few of my favorites with you.

I'll start with my first love: Hummel. My mom had a handful of Hummel figurines and I loved them from an early age. There's something so pure and innocent about the figures. At that age I didn't realize that they harkened back to a simpler time. I just knew I loved those little boys and girls. When I was older and on my own I bought a Hummel figurine to remind me of my own childhood. The collection grew and grew!

I try to limit myself to one Hummel ornament each year. The obvious choice would be the dated one, but that gets old, for me anyway. I have a few different styles of ornaments. Some years we do only ball ornaments and other years everything is all figurine style. I can't believe that I don't remember what we did last year! Oh well, I have my heart set on the figurine ornament. It's called "Good Tidings" and it's a sweet little girl holding a present.

Lladró is another one of my tried and true figurine makers. I'm not always super traditional, but there's a reason Lladró has been around so long! When it comes to Christmas ornaments, they really mix it up a bit. You can get the yearly Christmas bell, which is very classy. Or you can get their yearly Christmas bear. They team up with Steiff each year to offer a little teddy bear ornament. Too cute!

I have two folk-art style ornament makers that I love, too. If I want something more like a "country Christmas" I'll break out the Willow Tree ornaments or my Jim Shore ornaments. With Willow Tree, I swear I could do a whole "angel" themed tree. Susan Lordi's work is just so great. The ornaments are a really great price, too. You will spend less than $20 for an ornament -- compare that to the $150 for a Lladró Christmas bear! Willow Tree ornaments make wonderful gifts, too.

Have you heard of Jim Shore? I love, love, love his Christmas cats. The other ornament designs are wonderful too, but the whimsy of the "Cat Snowman" is irresistible. Part of me wants to put it on the tree every year. Earlier this year I saw the pineapple ornament he's introduced for this Christmas. It's gorgeous and it's going to be my hostess gift this year. At $10 it's a nice thrifty option and I love the symbol of the pineapple.

Spotlight: Willow Tree Figurines

Have you heard of Willow Tree figurines? I love them! Simple, elegant and affordable. Three words I love. Artist Susan Lordi handcrafts the design and then they are recreated for the world to enjoy.

The figures evoke such emotion but without much ornamentation. I think that's the main reason I love them. When you look at a tableau like Cherish, Angel of Mine and New Life.... when you put those three figurines together it's beautiful and the story it tells will warm your heart. First you have a simple figurine: a young woman, the figurine is called "Cherish." Her hands cradle her belly and you see the rounded curves and realize that she's pregnant. Your mind serves up the missing facial expression. You know it already -- the serene joy that is a expectant mother's right. Next, once the baby has been born, illustrated in the figurine "Angel of Mine," you see the woman holding the newborn to her chest. The infant's hand rests on the mother's collarbone. A tender scene of motherly love. The last figurine is "New Life." Here you see the father and the lines of his body as he holds his brand new child are wonderful. You see his amazement as he gazes at this tiny creature. His wife kneels beside him and you know that they are thinking "Look at what we made!" Any new Dad would love to have this reminder of the magical moment when he first held his child.

It's the right time of year to talk about the Willow Tree nativity figurines. For less than $200 you can have a unique and evocative nativity scene. Start with the Family. Joseph with his staff, Mary with baby Jesus in her arms, a shepherd boy with a few sheep and the famous donkey that got Mary & Joseph to Bethlehem. Next, add the Three Wisemen. Each holds his precious gift -- gold, frankincense and myrrh. In particular, their turbans are nicely rendered. There's a second shepherd, with camel and a few more animals that can be added to the scene. In addition there's an ox and goat combo that can be bought and added. The crowning touch? A Willow Tree angel! My favorite is the Angel of Hope. Her lantern will shine light on the whole scene and add just the right touch.

I'm so glad I found out about Willow Tree collectables! I was just wandering in one of our local gift shops one day. You know how it is -- just waiting for inspiration and then I saw these figurines. That was, oh about three years ago and my collection keeps growing!

Figurines and Their History

No one agrees on when figurines first became part of the human psyche. Were they grave goods? Fertility symbols? Religious icons? The right answer is probably "all of the above." What matters to me is not the when but the why. Maybe that's something we can explore together in this blog.

Some of the earliest figurines are often called "Venus figurines". They are small, rounded figures depicting the female form. The figures have pendulous breasts and rounded bellies. Many examples, mostly from Europe, are carved from limestone. There are clay versions and they are among the earliest examples of fired clay.
The Venus figurines are fascinating to me. I remember reading about them as a child and wondering at their significance.

Those very early figurines, from a pre-agricultural world, are crude in comparison to later Minoan and Greek figures. We have examples of Minoan Iron Age terracotta figurines with excellent facial detail. To my mind the earliest ancestors of our modern figurines are the Tanagra figurines of fourth century (BCE) Greece. They are named for the Boeotian town of Tanagra. The figurines were coated with a liquid before firing and then painted afterwards. Probably the best known example is the "Dame en Bleu" ("Lady in Blue") at the Louvre.

Tanagra figures depict real people in everyday costume, wearing hats or carrying fans. The examples found are mostly women, but there are figurines of men and children -- boys actually. Typically they are about 4 to 8 inches high. What inspired someone or some group, most likely, to create these little gems? Scholars think they probably had religious or ceremonial significance. Maybe they were used in rituals. Many have been found at grave sites. Some may have been worn as jewelry or intended to amuse children.

Porcelain became a common material for figurines. In China, where the art of creating porcelain originated, the artists and craftsmen made figurines, but what they are know for is the wares -- the plates and vases and cups. The delicate beauty of those early ceramics is unparalleled. And when Europeans saw the wonders of porcelain, they were driven to replicate the process. The first European porcelain figurines, produced in a process mastered in Germany, were known as Meissen ware after the city where it began.

Modern figurines come in many styles. Some of the best known makers include: Hummel, Lenox, Precious Moments, Royal Doulton and Lladró.
